Ever Tried Olive Oil & Honey For Sore
Throats?
Tonsils, olive oil & honey
make good friends. Someone was suffering from tonsillitis recently. Her throat
hurt so much it felt like there was a rock lodged in it. When all else failed,
she drank a little olive oil and honey remembering some recommendations to use
it after she had a major operation, and voila! It worked instantly! Honey when
drank or gargled provides anti-bacterial properties and soothes the inflamed
tonsils directly.
How much? Try a tablespoon but
more won’t harm you anyway. The wavy texture of honey also coats your throat
and keeps your tonsils moist. Honey kills bacteria and prevents it from
colonizing your tonsils with its acidity. It is also due to an anti-bacterial
peptide called defensin-1 which is the bee’s defense against bacterial
infection.
Olive oil can also do wonders for
your tonsils! Apart from moisturizing it, olive oil also contains anti-bacterial
and anti-viral properties. It can also relieve tonsil inflammation due to a
component called Oleocanthal that is anti-inflammatory similar to what
ibuprofen does. Virgin or extra virgin olive oil is better since it has more
polyphenols compared to refined or processed olive oils. Polyphenols are powerful
antioxidants that help the body get rid of free radicals that cause
inflammation of cells. Fresher is always better, the fresher the oil the higher
the antioxidant properties. As with honey you can either drink it or gargle it.
So if you’re having a bout of
tonsillitis or sore throat, try one of these amazing cures, or even both like
my friend did. As you can see both of them can do wonders, not just for your
tonsils, but for your general well-being!
